Goat breeds

Sudanese goats fall into four types: Nubian goat, Desert  goat ,upland goat and Nilotic goat. The Nubian goats are the most numerous and most widely distributed especially in urban and Riverine areas where they constitute the bulk of the goat population.

Nubian goats are long-legged (71-76 cm high) with long black hair, long beard and long pendulous ears. Males have curved Roman nose. Variable mature weights (27-35 kg for does;40-60 for bucks) were observed.

Sudan Desert goat is found in the deserts of northern Sudan outside Riverine and urban areas being the goat of choice for nomadic tribes in the Savannah belt of northern Darfur and Kordofan regions. Sudan Desert goats may have equal or slightly bigger size than Nubian goats. They have shorter ears than Nubian goat; ears being silver white in color with numerous small black or gray spots and well developed beard..

In addition to large sized goats Sudan accommodates two breeds of small sized goats: the Nilotic goat in southern Sudan; and Upland goat in the Nuba Mountains, Red Sea hills, Ingessana hills, Jabal Marrah and River Attbara.

Nilotic goats are small sized animals(17-22 kg mature weight)  with compact body .They have short  coat with variable colors (white, black and mixture of colors ).Ears are small ;mane and beard are integral parts of the animal .

Upland goat is small, short legged and very active in nature .Both sexes have short slightly backward curved horns. The coat is short and has predominantly dark or light brown color.

Several foreign goat breeds have been imported to the country over  the years and include: Damascus (Syrian)  , Anglo Nubian, Saanen, and Toggenburg goats.
