4. Experience & Research
I joined Fisheries Research Centre since first graduation in 1968. As a fisheries research officer of the White Nile Research Section for the period 1968-1970 conducted basic and fundamental field work on biological surveys of the fishes and fisheries of Gebal Aulia Reservoir (Dam-Lake Reservoir 600-1500 km2, extending 629 km from the barrage at Gebal Aulia to El-Rank in the south). Main field stops at which surveys were concentrated covered the main landing sites at large towns of Gebal Aulia, El Getina, El Kawa, Kosti, and El Rank. Fundamental research results obtained during the above period furnished basic lines about fisheries resource to enable important management and development activities to be formulated.
During the period 1971-1995 I worked as head of Lake Nubia Fisheries Research Section ( Lake is the southern part of the Aswan High-Dam Reservoir, extending 180 km within northern Sudan to form a total surface area of about 1000 km2). Duties and experience of the whole period of more than a decade covered programming, supervising and carrying basic and applied research to produce relevant needed information for sustainable development and management of Lake Nubia fisheries resources.
Research findings from Lake Nubia ,based on preliminary lake-wide biology and limnological surveys (1972) accounted on fishes and plankton species and their distribution , water physical and chemical characteristics ; and bottom fauna and flora . Fishing gear selectivities (1973-1989) ,covered gillnet-selection and multifilament twines selectivity; was continued as Msc proposal 1974-1977 and further research on mono &multifilament twines continued during the period 1983-1989 . Later studies, 1992-1996, on post- harvest fish technology and quality control, fish yields and flesh proximate chemical and physical analysis, besides fish meal and fish feeds production contributed basic results to the field of study on commercial fish catches of Lake Nubia.
Also some investigations of residual organo-compounds in fishes of Lake Nubia and a note on fish mortalities 1982, as pollution studies were results on Lake Nubia fisheries.
During 1977-1978 I acted as director of Fisheries Research Centre Agricultural Research Corporation) for about 8 months. At present and since March 1996 ( upon affiliation of Fisheries Research Centre to Animal Resources Research Corporation, under the Ministry of Animal Resources ) I am the Director of the Fisheries Research Centre ( which is still under the auspices of the Animal Resources Research Corporation ; but transferred to the Ministry of Science and Technology since February 2001 ).
